The faith of our citizens' in government seems to know no bounds. The faith in free markets and individual responsibility which have brought us to our current progress are being abandoned. Mostly in the name of, "there are problems with what we have." Yes, definitely. There are problems. And there are some great solutions out there that are untried.
How about putting health insurance in the hands of individuals instead of companies. Simple to do. Give individuals the tax write off you have given companies. You create a market that will drive cost reduction and options. Instant portability.
Require everyone to carry emergency health care to cover use of emergency rooms. This seems reasonable. We don't let you drive a car without insurance. There certainly is a free rider problem with emergency rooms.
There are dozens of problems and thousands of solutions that can be targeted at addressing the problems. A huge set of the problems are caused by government interference in the first place.
So the solution set which is going to push through is over a thousand pages of law with hundreds of TBDs. The proof of government incompetence demonstrated by the poor quality and financial failings of medicare and medicaid is enough for me to understand that this will not work.
The law of unintended consequence that will kick in from the depth and scope of the meddling can not be calculated.
Check out http://keithhennessey.com/2009/06/09/house-health-bill/ for a sample. Note how much of the bill that is undefined or vague.
If that doesn't scare you, you deserve what you get. Unfortunately, I'll get what you deserve.
